Welcome
Ruth has had a long career in care and support across many levels across our society. She began her career in 1991 with the NHS, and it was here that she developed a passion for caring for older people. Ruth then moved over to the local authority, where she worked in a number of services, including residential care, day services for disabled adults, adults with learning difficulties, and then on to domiciliary care. She enjoyed all of these roles and found each experience rewarding, challenging, and beneficial to her career. In 2017, after 20 years of service with the local authority, Ruth moved to the private sector to continue her career with older people. She became a registered manager of a nursing home and has remained in this role ever since.

About Covent House Care Home, Birtley, Gateshead
Built over five floors, Covent House provides 63 single en-suite bedrooms for residents, specialist in-house physiotherapy facilities including a hydrotherapy pool, and a range of leisure facilities and lounges for residents to enjoy and socialise with other residents, family and friends.
Additional facilities include a cinema, cafe, physiotherapy treatment room, laundry, a lift to all floors, lounges and dining rooms on all floors, and a quiet lounge located on each floor.
Externally, Covent House benefits from landscaped secluded gardens, with terraced areas, with seating and planted areas. There is also a roof garden – thought to be the first of its kind in the North East – with walking paths and planted raised beds. Covent House provides modern, tastefully decorated and furnished, welcoming and homely spaces for living, rehabilitation and relaxation.
Each of the bedrooms feature specialist furniture and mobility aids where required to ensure the comfort and wellbeing of our residents. LCD televisions and unlimited internet access are standard, with residents encouraged to personalise their bedrooms and make Covent House their home.
Residents can relax in the privacy of their bedroom or in any of Covent House’s communal lounges which offer a range of formal and informal spaces to gather, chat with other residents or family and friends and participate in activities and celebrations. The importance of independence is at the heart of Prestwick Care ethos and residents are encouraged to participate, where possible, in the many and varied activities which take place at Covent House. Activities include gentle exercise, physiotherapy, bingo, cards, cinema nights, carpet bowls, art classes and music, as well as celebrations for our residents and their families.
Each element of care provided at Covent House is bespoke, with residents’ specific dietary and nutritional, physiotherapy, social and healthcare requirements and preferences recorded and incorporated into person-centred care plans. We work closely with everyone involved in the care and welfare of our residents, from family and friends to GPs, carers, external professionals and nutritionists.
